Breaking the Stereotype
There is an idea out there that parents home school because they just don’t want to be away from their kids or they need to control them 100%. In my experience, this is just not true! All of the homeschooling families that I have met are mamas just like me, who invest a huge interest into what their children are learning. They’re hands on and they are doers. They craft and play and do experiments. They gather with friends and find any opportunities to go on field trips and they go! As homeschooling becomes more prevalent, I believe what people perceive as the negative side of it disappears. It’s not all sheltered children in a gloomy home with a computer and pile of books. It’s a commitment, yes, BUT it is as fun as you make it! Learning can be done anywhere and everywhere and that is the beauty of it.
My “Why”
My personal reason for homeschooling is mainly potential. I believe that because I am able to focus attention on my few children, we have the opportunity to do a lot more and learn a lot faster. (I don’t speak for other homeschooling families, these are just my personal reasons.) I’ve witnessed this as my oldest started reading on his own at 4 years old. I think having a good plan and realistic goal is key.
Another thing I love is that I can stem from my child’s interests. He has always loved books and been excited about reading and that allowed for easy opportunities to teach. It’s 1000% easier to teach someone about things that interest them! Homeschooling allows me to let him lead in that way. It’s easy to delve deep into things that children are already excited about! That being said, I think you can make just about anything interesting to a child that you know. For instance, I know that my child loves reading and loves hands on activities, so going forward I can fit those types of learning into our plans. I’m super excited to start planning for this next year of homeschooling!
